Biomedical Informatics Program

Summary:

The Biomedical Informatics Program (BMIP) provides investigators with state of the art informatics tools and methodologies to support translational researchers. Using a hybrid of collaborative and service approaches, BMIP is continually developing and deploying an array of informatics tools for bench research (bioinformatics), bedside research (clinical research informatics), and translation to practice (medical informatics). BMIP also provides a platform for collaborative and multidisciplinary informatics education and research.

The Biomedical Informatics Program includes two major areas of emphasis:

  • Research Data Warehouse ( Database )

    "OCTRI maintains a repository of Epic data from patients and research subjects. This valuable resource is known as the Research Data Warehouse (RDW). The RDW provides access to over 2.5 million patient records with 20 million patient encounter records and more than 40,000 data points. Researchers work with OCTRI staff to obtain answers to a variety of research purposes.

    Cohort discovery (counters) for preparatory to research purposes
    Deidentified data sets for epidemiological studies
    Data sets that identify potential study participants or gather retrospective data on current study participants

    The Research Data Warehouse (RDW) contains an enormous amount of linked clinical data and can be queried to answer a broad range of research questions. OCTRI staff can act as your guide through this complex data."

We have the resources and expertise – software engineering, research analysts, and project management – available to assist researchers and staff with the storage, retrieval, sharing, and optimal use of biomedical information, data, and knowledge for problem solving and decision making.

    OCTRI helps design data collection and management systems to meet the requirements of individual researchers – from developing and implementing a variety of state-of-the-art project-based data collection and management tools to support investigators involved in patient-oriented research. Data management services cover the entire clinical research life cycle from study design through data evaluation and publication.

  • Functional Genomics Consultation: Microarray Proteomics ( Support service )

    "OCTRI offers assistance with the experimental design, pre-processing, analysis and interpretation of functional genomics studies (microarray – Affymetrix, Illumina, Agilent), proteomics and next generation sequencing (ABI, Illumina).

    Our focus is on the development and application of statistical and computational methodologies for analysis and integration of functional genomics (microarray, proteomics, NGS) data for network reconstruction with an emphasis on understanding transcriptional regulation as it relates to disease etiology (cancer, alcoholism, Alzheimer's disease, etc).

    Our experts have extensive expertise in the development of high throughput statistical workflows and creation of bioinformatics pipelines for new and evolving technology. Collaborations with industry (Affymetrix, Illumina, ABI) ensure that the methodological development keeps pace with evolving data types."

  • REDCap Tutorial Drop-In Sessions ( Support service )

    "OCTRI can provide researchers with tools for data collection and management. REDCap is user-friendly—fast and easy to set-up, web-based, and secure—ensuring data quality and compliance with regulatory requirements.


    Getting Started with REDCap

    REDCap tutorial sessions provide researchers and their staff with an overview of REDCap capabilities and some of the functionality. Attendees will learn how to prepare and create REDCap databases and surveys.

    A REDCap Tutorial SessionsTo learn more about REDCap, come to a REDCap Tutorial Session. No registration is required and drop-ins are welcome.

    To learn about how to set up a REDCap database or survey tutorial sessions are offered on the first and third Thursday of each month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

    Additionally we offer an advanced class the fourth Thursday of every month from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The class material will largely be driven by the needs of the attendees and will include demonstrations of a variety of features, including the import tool, the data dictionary, double data entry, data transfer services and data quality rules.

  • Research Databases: REDCap & Customized Databases ( Support service )

    "REDCap offers a secure, web-based application designed to support data management for research studies. REDCap provides: a stream-lined process for rapidly building a database or online survey; a user friendly interface for collecting data; audit trails for tracking data manipulation; exports to common statistical packages; and advanced features, such as branching logic, file uploading, and calculated fields.

    User-Friendly Online Surveys: REDCap has a survey tool that is a powerful for building and managing online surveys (similar to Survey Monkey). Investigators and study staff can easily create and design surveys in a web browser and engage potential respondents using a variety of notification methods. The survey feature allows research teams to rapidly develop web-based surveys that can be launched in less than a day."

  • Statistical Genetics Consultation: Experimental Design & Analysis ( Support service )

    "OCTRI offers statistical genetics expertise in the experimental design and analysis of complex traits. This includes power analysis and sample size estimates, simulation studies, and statistical analysis. OCTRI experts have experience with linkage, quantitative trait loci detection (phenotype and expression), as well as association (candidate gene and Genome Wide Association Studies – both primary and secondary analysis). "
